Handmade Greetings Boxed Cards - Joy

The wreath has been a symbol of welcome and everlasting life for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks crowned victors with wreaths of laurel, and evergreen rings were hung on doors across northern Europe through the dark winter months. The Advent wreath as we know it grew from a German tradition in 1839, when Johann Hinrich Wichern hung a wooden wheel with candles in his Hamburg home to count the days until Christmas. Today a wreath on the door still says the same thing it always has: come in, you are welcome here.

This card wraps that welcome in a classic red-and-green plaid border. At its center, a full pine and holly wreath stands out in raised relief, with clusters of red foil berries scattered through the greenery. A plaid fabric bow ties the wreath at the top, and a raised banner beneath it carries the word "joy" in red foil script. The scene feels both rustic and festive, like a wreath hanging on a farmhouse door.

Inside, the verse reads: "Have a joyous holiday!"
