The poinsettia's Christmas history starts in Mexico. According to legend, a young girl named Pepita had nothing to bring to the Christmas Eve service except a handful of roadside weeds. When she laid them at the altar, they burst into brilliant red blooms, which became known as Flores de Noche Buena, the "Flowers of the Holy Night." In the 1820s, Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. minister to Mexico and an amateur botanist, sent cuttings home to South Carolina, and the plant took his name.
