Religious Favorites Christmas Card Set - Silent Night, Holy Night

"Silent Night" was born out of a small problem. On Christmas Eve 1818, in the Austrian village of Oberndorf, the organ at St. Nicholas Church had broken down. The priest, Joseph Mohr, had written a poem a couple of years earlier, and he brought it to the organist and schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber, who set it to a gentle melody for guitar. The carol was sung that night and quickly spread through the region, and it has since been translated into more languages than almost any other Christmas song.

This landscape card carries that quiet moment into a valley beneath a deep teal sky. A single bright star glows above the distant hills, while silhouetted shepherds rest on the hillside with their sheep, just as the shepherds did when they heard the good news in Luke 2. The words "Silent Night, Holy Night" are set in silver foil at the upper left, in a flowing script with smaller capitals below, so the lettering shines against the dark blue scene.

Inside, the verse reads: "May God bless your Christmas with hope and peace."
